Spain

Spain celebrates the holiday season with lots of usual festivities. There is one tradition. It’s not all that common elsewhere. It’s named “hongueras” which mean bonfires. This tradition takes place way before Christmas. This happens on the shortest day of the year and the beginning of winter, which is December 21.”It is characterized by people jumping over fires as a symbolic protection against illness. This fire-jumping can be seen primarily in Granada and Jaen.
A more common tradition is ”Nacimiento” which means nativity scenes. Which they have Christmas trees, and remarkable Christmas market all over towns and cities. They are piled up with fruits, flowers, marzipan, and many others. They have candles, decorations, and hand made Christmas gifts. Dinner is never eaten until after midnight. It is a family feast. They often highlighted “Pavo Trufado de Navidad” which is Christmas turkey with truffles. After the feast everyone gathers around and has sing carols and hymn. Christmas day is spent at church. It’s not Santa who comes it the three wise men.


Puerto Rico

Aguinaldos is what they call their Christmas songs. Some songs of theirs are very religious and they are called villancicos. Despedida de Ano or ano viego which is their new years eve that takes place on December 31. They celebrate it with firecracker and parties that don’t end until morning. Dia de los inocentes is on December 28th. This iscelebrated much like a carnival. The men dressed up like soldiers of Herod. “They went house to house kidnapping the the first- born child from every family.” This tradition continues still today in s town called Hatillo. Misa de Aguinaldo is a catholic mass. It’s almost like a song service. Instruments they use for this are guitars, guiros, and maracas. This is held 9 days before Christmas. Misa de gallo is held at midnight on Christmas Eve. It is a festive mass often including carolers, children dressed up as angels, and lots of candles. Nochebuen is Christmas Eve. Friends and family get together for traditional services. Navidad is Christmas day. Most Puerto Rican families celebrate Santa. They decorate with lots of palm trees and their branches. There is much more holidays.


Mexico

Christmas for Mexicans is a very religious holiday. This is celebrated on the birth our lord Jesus. 9 days before Christmas is called noche Buena which is holy night. Children and adults who have to request lodging through singing a simple chant and they carry little candles in their hands. After singing traditional songs they stop praying and they have a party for the children. The piñata was originally from Italy it’s also a Mexican tradition. For the adults there is “ponche con piquete” which is a hot beverage or punch. “On Noche Buena, everyone goesto misa de noiche Buena which is at midnight.” They do not receive presents on Christmas. Christmas is a celebration of life of our savior. They do no receive gifts until January 6th. “El dia de Reyes” means the wise men day. Rosca de Reyes is an oval wreath made out of egg bread. “El dia de la candelaria is the day of the candle or light, known as the day of purification.” There is much for festivities that take place in Mexico.
